WEEK 3 - Cutting pattern pieces & sewing

Hi everyone! And welcome to Week 3 of the Patchwork Plum Dress sew-along :)

This week we will be cutting all our pattern pieces, including the patchwork panels, plus starting the assembly of the actual dress for which you will be following the instructions for the regular Plum that you received when purchasing the pattern. Let's go!

CUTTING ALL PATTERN PIECES

Let's start with the patchwork panels.

In my case, I had to cut the front bodice and the skirt front and back pieces, and what I did was to treat them as regular pieces of fabric.

Then, I just pinned (or use pattern weights) and cut! The same like you'd do with any other pattern piece and fabric. The only thing to have in mind is to place your pattern piece strategically so that the lines you marked with a pencil match how the fabrics are stitched underneath.

Then, I moved onto the rest of the pattern pieces. I cut the two sleeves using a different colour each; went for the same one for both of the cuffs, similar thing for the inseam pockets and chose to do a back bodice in the same way as the sleeves. You can see all the pattern pieces cut below! I also overlocked all pieces all around before sewing them together.

DRESS ASSEMBLY

Now, you can move onto the actual assembly of the dress. For this, I suggest you follow the steps that you will find on the booklet with the instructions, considering a few things:

  • You might want to follow the same seam finishing technique now that you did when creaing the patchwork panels if possible.

  • Or you can just use an overlock or zigzag stitch everywhere and that's totally fine!

  • Remember to use a lining for the bodice if that's what you decided to do when creating the patchwork panels.

  • Make sure all seams are facing the same way if together or properly nested if pressed open.

  • Last, you can also follow the tutorial I posted on YouTube on how to make Plum!

HIGHLIGHTS WHEN MAKING MY OWN PLUM VERSION

As I was making my version, I took some pictures to show you how it went for me.

  • Pinning the sleeves.

  • Finished patchwork bodice.

  • Pinning and sewing skirt and bodice.

And that is it for week 3! I will see you again next Saturday, when we will be finishing the dress and celebrating having made such a cute garment!

PS. You can contact me at any time on Instagram or by email at hi@cocowawacrafts.com if you have any doubts :)

Thank you for following along and happy sewing!
