Another day of the Sew Along for the lovely Chestnut Sweater and Top sewing pattern and today we are focusing on the bows, facings and necklines of versions A and B of either of them. So, let's start!
Sweater and Top version A
First of all you need to start with the facing piece that goes at the back (you can overlock the sides and curve prior to attaching it to the back). So take your facing piece and place it over your back opening with right sides together, pin and before stitching, take your two ribbon pieces and place them in between your facing and the back bodice, right where the placement mark is. The ribbon needs to sit 3/8''/1cm away from the neckline. Stitch.
Now fold the facing to the inside of the sweater or top back bodice piece and topstitch or simply stitch close to the fold to prevent the facing from pocking out and using a 0.5cm seam allowance.
At this stage you can already finish the rest of your neckline by folding it 3/8''/1cm to the inside of the top, wrong sides together and using a zigzag stitch or your twin needle (go to the previous post to see how to use your double needle).
Sweater and Top version B
If you have chosen version B of either the sweater or the top, with all the lovely bows at the back, you first need to take your two facing pieces (overlock one of the long edges if you want) and place them over the two back openings, right sides together. But before pining, you need to take your ribbon pieces (8 in total, two for each bow, and there are 4) and position them evenly along the back openings, and then place your facing pieces over them. The ribbon will be sandwiched between both layers of fabric.
Now stitch both layers plus the ribbons together along the raw edge and also sew a line of stitches at the top of both openings, along the facing and back piece, 3/8''/1cm away from the neckline.
Turn the facing to the inside and topstitch or simply stitch close to the fold to prevent the facing from pocking out and using a 0.5cm seam allowance.
At this stage you can already finish the rest of your neckline by folding it 3/8''/1cm to the inside of the top, wrong sides together and using a zigzag stitch or your twin needle (go to the previous post to see how to use your double needle).
So, do you see that your garment is coming along already, right? Tomorrow, we will do sleeves, cuffs and side seams. Almost there guys!
Happy sewing!
