Learn to quilt with CocoWawa
Hi lovely makers,
I am here to present a new project, the Mini Quilt Pattern and it is completely FREE! You just need to sign-up to the newsletter to download it and you will be able to start making it asap :)
The pattern instructions come as a PDF downloadable file. The design presents endless colour and fabric combinations and it is perfect for beginner quilters or dressmakers wanting to learn how to quilt.
Details of the Mini Quilt Pattern
This quilt comes in one very manageable size, ideal if it's your first time quilting or if you don't have much quilty experience. The finished Mini Quilt measures 22 ½'' x 22 ½''. Each block is made out of a Half-Square Triangle measuring 4 ½'' x 4 ½'' before sewn. There is a total of 25 blocks.
This is a pre-cut friendly project for which I used a total of 15 squares from a 5'' x 5'' 'Pixel' Charm Pack by Ruby Star Society plus 15 squares of the background colour 'Coconut Milk' from Pure Solids, Art Gallery Fabrics for the quilt top. You can adjust to your own taste and also use scraps from your fabric stash.
For the backing I used some leftover fabric from another Ruby Star Society collection, 'Reading Nook'. The binding were scraps from the 'Pixel' collection.
To summarise, for the quilt top, backing and bias binding, go for quilting cotton. For the batting / wadding, choose 100% cotton or a 80/20 cotton and poly blend.
And remember, the amount of batting / wadding needed depends on whether you are buying pre-packed batting or if you are buying it in yards. Always remember that the batting needs to be at least 2'' bigger on all sides than the quilt top and that the backing should be 2'' bigger than the batting on all sides as well.
You will find charts and more on the instructions when you download the pattern.
What can you learn making this Mini Quilt?
- First, how to cut strips of fabric efficiently using the width of the fabric.
- Then, you will learn how to sew HSTs or Half-Square Triangles which are one of the most used blocks in quilting. On the Kaleidoscope Quilt, they are part of two of the main blocks repeated several times, depending on the size, along the quilt.
- You will also understand how to square-up a quilt block so that it has the desired finished measurements. And not only normal square blocks, but Half-Square Triangles. This can be used for any quilt or block you sew in the future.
Now, are you ready to make your own Free Mini Quilt? :)
Happy quilting!
